The Ontario Seniors Hub is an educational reference. It is not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for consultation with a licensed physician, registered dietitian, pharmacist, or other qualified healthcare provider. Never start, stop, or change a supplement, diet, or health routine based solely on information from this Site.

What the Vitamins & Nutrients reference is for

Our Vitamins & Nutrients reference describes what a vitamin or nutrient generally does in the body and where it's commonly found in food — the kind of general orientation you might want before a doctor's appointment or a conversation with a dietitian. It does not include dosing recommendations, and it is not designed, and should not be used, as a clinical reference for making an actual supplement decision.

Vitamins and supplements carry their own risks

Vitamins and nutrients, including those generally considered safe, can interact with medications, other supplements, or existing health conditions, and can cause harm in excessive amounts, particularly fat-soluble vitamins that the body stores over time. What's appropriate for one person may not be appropriate for another. Our Vitamins & Nutrients reference does not include dosing recommendations for this reason.

Individual factors this Site cannot account for

Whether a particular vitamin or supplement is appropriate depends on factors specific to you that a general reference tool has no way to know — your age, existing health conditions, medications you take, allergies, and pregnancy status among them. Only a healthcare provider with your actual medical history can determine what's appropriate for you.

Supplement and medication interactions

This Site does not perform interaction checking. If you take one or more medications or supplements, ask your pharmacist to review your full list for interactions — this is a service most pharmacies provide and is far more reliable than any general information source.

In an emergency

If you suspect a severe allergic reaction or any supplement-related emergency, contact emergency services or a poison control center immediately. Do not use this Site, or wait to search it, in an emergency situation.

No doctor-patient relationship

Using this Site does not create a doctor-patient, dietitian-client, or any other professional healthcare relationship between you and The Ontario Seniors Hub.

Reporting a concern

If you believe an entry on this Site contains a significant error, please see our Corrections Policy — we take reports about vitamin and nutrient information seriously and will review and correct confirmed errors.
